History

First Presbyterian Church in Brookline (FPCB) began as a group who gathered together for worship in a home on White Place in 1893. In 1894, plans were made, and an official church was organized. The congregation found a permanent home in 1910 when they purchased a Baptist church on Harvard St. in Brookline, where you find us today. The congregation grew and prospered for another fifty years, until the original church burned on New Year's Eve in 1960. Rallying, the congregation worked with surrounding Presbyterian churches to raise funds and rebuild. During this time, from January 1961 to June 1962, the congregation worshipped at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline. You can see a large stone with an engraved plaque on it in front of FPCB today, commemorating the Temple's generosity and friendship. In June 1962, services resumed in the newly built church.

In 1968, the Korean Christian Church, now the Korean Church of Boston (KCB), began to meet at the church, its congregation growing steadily over the years. In the early 90s, membership in the FPCB congregation began to decline, while the KCB congregation membership continued to expand. During this time, stewardship of the building was transferred to the KCB. The FPCB congregation continues to worship in the church and enjoys a good relationship with the KCB congregation.

Now we are in a time of transition and renewal as the building expands and changes, and we look forward to seeing what the future brings. We are a dynamic congregation with a strong commitment to diversity and community, and we invite you to join us in our part of God's story.
